Mitchell & Son remains committed to delivering the finest products while continuing to nurture the multigenerational relationships they have built with esteemed wine producers around the world.

A Rich History of Family Tradition and Quality

Mitchell & Son was established in 1805 by William Mitchell, beginning as a bakery, confectionery and restaurant at number 10 Grafton Street in Dublin and soon became the city’s most fashionable spot for sipping tea and coffee. It wasn’t just a hit locally but also gained recognition when it was granted a royal warrant as confectioners to England’s Queen Victoria in 1850. Over time, the business evolved into one of Ireland’s leading wine and spirit merchants, becoming renowned for its fine wines and Irish whiskey blends, including the iconic “Green Spot” Irish whiskey. Seven generations later, the Mitchell family continues to uphold the values that have made the company a trusted name, combining tradition with a passion for quality and service. In 1887, the company opened a shop in Kildare Street and commenced bonding whiskey and importing exclusive wines in bottle, cask and hogsheads. The shop and cellars provided ample space for bottling Sherry, Port, Rum, Gin and many wines from chateaux in Bordeaux. Due to difficult access and parking changes on the street, it moved to open new stores in Glasthule Village and in the CHQ building in the IFSC. In addition, the company opened two concession stores in Avoca Dunboyne and Kilmacanogue Co. Wicklow. The opening of the Vaults will mark the fifth Mitchell shop since its founding 220 years ago.
