The third annual Sustainability and Ethics Progress Report showcases how Primark is embedding its sustainability commitments and delivering real impact across the business through the Primark Cares strategy.
The progress outlined in the report reflects the dedication of Primark's colleagues, suppliers, and partners, as well as the valuable insights gained from listening to customers. Sustainability initiatives are deeply woven into all aspects of the company’s operations, with significant effort dedicated to measuring their impact. Understanding the progress made enables the business to better anticipate future challenges and continue advancing at an even faster pace
Highlights from the 2023/2024 report:
- Reducing Carbon Emissions: Primark’s decarbonisation programme is beginning to decouple from its growth, with a 1.9% reduction in carbon emissions across its value chain since 2019 and 11.6% decrease since last year. Scope 1 and 2 emissions (market-based) were 52% lower than the 2019 baseline and reduced by 21% year-on-year. These achievements reflect energy efficiency measures, renewable electricity procurement, and the introduction of green fuel alternatives through our partnership with Maersk.
- Expanding Sustainable Materials: 66% of our clothing contained recycled or more sustainably sourced materials, up 20% from last year. We’re also scaling circular design, with 3% of our clothing now circular by design, marking progress in tackling textile waste and creating clothes recyclable at end-of-life.
- Supporting Regenerative Cotton Farming: The ongoing adoption of regenerative agriculture is a key advancement in the Primark Cotton Project, training cotton farmers to restore soil, protect biodiversity, and conserve water. Approximately 3,000 farmers have completed a pilot project across India, Bangladesh and Pakistan this year.
- Primark Durability Framework: Developed with support from industry experts, our newly published Durability Framework aims to help people get more wear out of their clothes, while highlighting the importance of durability in helping to tackle textile waste. Over the past three years, we have run 393 free repair workshops across five countries as a step to reinforce our commitment to Giving Clothes Longer Life.
- Improving the lives of the people who make our clothes: Primark’s long-standing worker upskilling programme Sudokkho is now nearly 10 years old and is running in 28 factories in Bangladesh. We have also signed a legally binding agreement to support collective bargaining in Cambodia’s garment and footwear sector, a key milestone on the path to establishing the first ever collective bargaining agreement in the country, and industry, which is directly supported by brands.
