Coolmine Therapeutic Community is a leading non-profit drug and alcohol treatment organisation dedicated to supporting individuals on their journey from addiction to recovery. For over 50 years, we have provided evidence-based treatment, helping people rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society. As addiction trends shift, our approach evolves to meet the changing needs of those affected.
In recent years, Ireland has witnessed a significant transformation in the landscape of addiction. Historically, substance misuse was most prevalent among marginalised communities, and while this remains true, today, addiction is crossing societal barriers and affecting individuals from all walks of life, including those in stable employment. At Coolmine, we have seen this shift firsthand. A decade ago, only 3% of those seeking our services were in employment. Today, that number has risen to 28%, reflecting a growing trend of addiction within the workforce and a pressing need for workplace-focused interventions.
Recent research supports this concern. The Laya Healthcare Workplace Wellbeing Index revealed that two in five Irish workers report struggling with addiction or an unhealthy relationship with at least one substance. Furthermore, 16% of workers admit to an unhealthy relationship with Class A or illicit drugs. These statistics highlight the growing prevalence of substance misuse in professional environments and the need for businesses to be proactive in addressing this issue.
Recognising this emerging challenge, Coolmine was invited by IBEC to speak at their HR Conference last year. Prior to the event, HR managers were asked to highlight areas of concern within the workplace, and one theme that arose was how to navigate concerns around substance misuse among employees.
In response to this growing need, Coolmine developed a dedicated Employee Well-being Programme designed to help businesses and HR professionals understand addiction, recognise its signs and symptoms, and implement effective workplace strategies to support employees. This programme includes our Signs & Symptoms of Addiction Workshop, which provides practical insights and expert guidance on fostering a supportive work environment. The workshop equips employers with the knowledge and confidence to address concerns in a compassionate and effective manner, ensuring that employees struggling with substance misuse receive the help they need before the issue escalates.
As addiction patterns continue to evolve, workplaces must adapt to this reality. The traditional perception of addiction as an issue affecting only the most vulnerable members of society is no longer accurate. More individuals in stable employment are facing addiction challenges, and organisations must be prepared to respond. Addressing this issue proactively can lead to improved employee well-being, increased workplace safety, and a more supportive and stigma-free culture.
For many businesses, substance misuse in the workplace remains an uncharted territory. There is often uncertainty around the best course of action, and many employers may feel ill-equipped to handle such a sensitive issue. However, by acknowledging the growing prevalence of addiction and implementing structured support systems, organisations can make a meaningful difference in the lives of their employees. By investing in awareness and education, companies can help prevent long-term issues, reduce absenteeism, and foster a healthier, more productive workforce.
Coolmine remains committed to supporting both individuals and organisations in tackling addiction. As we continue to witness a shift in addiction trends, our mission remains clear: to provide the necessary tools, resources, and support to ensure that individuals struggling with addiction receive the help they need. Businesses play a vital role in this effort, and by working together, we can create a future where addiction is better understood, addressed with compassion, and no longer a silent crisis in the workplace.
