Leading the charge on the switch to Electric Vehicles

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is a key step in Ireland’s journey towards a cleaner, greener future, but there are still significant barriers to widespread adoption, including access to charging infrastructure. SSE Airtricity is addressing these challenges by exploring collaborations in charging technology and accessibility to ensure that EV drivers have access to smarter, more efficient charging solutions.

Providing accessibility and optionality for customers, SSE Airtricity has a range of propositions and partnerships aiming to ease the transition to e-mobility. Tailor-made EV charging solutions are available to support commercial customers in greening their fleet including EV charger solutions and specialist EV charging cables and service packages with the potential for new revenue streams while reducing the commercial carbon footprint. All SSE Airtricity’s EV charger solutions can use Dynamic Load Management, allowing the installation of chargers without incurring costly infrastructure upgrades.

Strategic partnerships and smart home charging

Innovative solutions and strategic partnerships are empowering domestic customers to embrace cleaner, more sustainable driving. Making home EV charging more accessible and affordable for customers, a strategic partnership with Ohme sees intelligent home chargers now seamlessly integrated with SSE Airtricity’s electricity tariffs, optimising charging schedules to take advantage of lower off-peak rates. With a range of charger options, the partnership brings together Ohme's innovative smart charging technology and SSE Airtricity’s green energy solutions, helping to reduce costs and enhance the benefits of EV ownership.

EnergiHub: optimising your energy while charging at home

Technology is transforming EV ownership, making it more efficient and cost-effective. SSE Airtricity’s EnergiHub intelligent energy app provides real-time insights into energy consumption while optimising charging schedules. By integrating with EV chargers, smart meters, solar panels, and home batteries, EnergiHub ensures vehicles charge when electricity prices are lowest and renewable energy is most abundant.

Powered by AI, EnergiHub automatically secures the best market rates, helping users maximise renewable energy use and minimise costs. With a market-leading overnight rate of just 5p per kWh (ex. VAT) for at least four hours, EV owners can significantly reduce their charging expenses while supporting a greener grid—all from the convenience of their phone. So users can charge more affordably while living more sustainably.

Breaking down barriers

With an increasing number of EVs on Irish roads, the deployment of fast and reliable EV charging infrastructure is essential to support existing EV drivers and to reduce barriers to entry for drivers slow to make the switch. Last year, SSE opened its first ultra-rapid EV charging hub in Lough Sheever Corporate Park in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath and the company is working to build a network of easy-to-reach charging points that will serve communities across Ireland. The site was specifically designed to accommodate electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs), as well as standard EVs. Each ultra-rapid bay has charging capabilities of up to 150 kilowatts (kW), sufficient to deliver 12.5 kms of range per minute of charging. The hub also boasts four long wheelbase drive-through bays purpose built for eHGVs, making it the first site of its kind in Ireland.

Commitment to a Net-Zero Future

SSE Airtricity recognises that the shift to e-mobility is a crucial component of Ireland’s net-zero strategy. Investments in renewable energy, customer-focused EV solutions, and strategic partnerships are all contributing to the acceleration of this transition.

As Ireland moves toward a more sustainable energy future, SSE Airtricity remains focused on powering that transition—one charge at a time. Visit the SSE Airtricity EV Hub for the latest resources, support, and solutions helping customers navigate the shift to electric transport here.
