Monday 21st October. The report from the Dublin City Taskforce published today contains some key findings that will greatly improve city life, but only if they are fully implemented.
Head of Public Affairs Stephen Browne said “we welcome the report. It has adopted the bulk of our core recommendations. However, we have been making these points for several years, with little response from Government. So for us, the real test will be if the recommendations are implemented in full and appropriately funded.”
"For example, one of the key recommendations in the report centres around the need for more Gardaí to be directly patrolling the streets of the City. As part of our pre-election meetings with Government, we have called for an increase in overall numbers from 14,000 to 18,000."
“The Dublin Taskforce makes a number of proposals around increased taxation that require much more detailed consideration. We do not accept the need for a congestion charge without a much greater investment in public transport alternatives for commuters across the Greater Dublin Area. In addition, we are concerned that a tourist tax will simply be used to offset much needed central Exchequer funding.”
“Dublin Chamber looks forward to working with Dublin City Council and Government, as a ready and willing partner, to progress the recommendations in the report. Action is required now to ensure that the quality of life in Dublin City improves for all those who work, live and visit Dublin.”
Stephen Browne concluded “What Dublin needs is investment and ambition from its elected leaders, these recommendations go some way in tackling the issues that our City faces. We are glad that David McRedmond and his Taskforce has now given some concrete actions, it is now up to Government and DCC to take these and implement them to ensure that Dublin works for people who live, work and run a business in the City.”
