On the 15th January, the much-anticipated Programme for Government was published. The 162 page document sets out Ireland’s policy roadmap over the lifetime of the new Government, which is comprised of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, with the support of the Independent Regional Group and Kerry Independent TDs, Michael and Danny Healy-Rae.
Dublin Chamber was pleased to see that this ambitious framework closely aligns with many of the priorities that we have long advocated for. We particularly welcome the inclusion of the recommendations from the Dublin City Taskforce Report, which highlight critical issues such as the need for cleaner streets, a stronger Garda presence and an overall more attractive and vibrant city. We were also pleased to see an emphasis on housing, water and transport infrastructure projects. However, as Dublin Chamber has noted previously, these priorities are not new, and their real value lies in the delivery.
In addition to this, Dublin Chamber was encouraged by the new Government’s commitment to removing the Passenger Cap at Dublin Airport as well as improving services in childcare, education and training to support the demands of the growing workforce. In relation to sustainability, we were happy to see a commitment to increased investment in the electrical grid as well as a recognition of the important role data centres play in the Irish economy. The promotion of district heating is just one of the ways this industry can help Ireland achieve its binding climate targets. Dublin Chamber believes that the new Government has a unique opportunity to shape Dublin into a world-class capital that drives Ireland’s economic success. However, this hinges on their ability to implement the policies and deliver on the commitments that they have set out. We have already written to each of the new members of Cabinet, offering our support and encouragement. We will continue to act as a liaison between your business and Government to ensure that the issues affecting business are addressed.
With the Government now formed, Dublin Chamber is eager to hear your feedback. We will be hosting a roundtable next Friday 31st January for members to share their insights and perspectives. The roundtable will be held online and will last approximately 60 minutes. Discussions will be based on your individual input and broadly framed around the following questions:
- What do you think should be the Government's top priorities in its first 100 days?
- Do you think that the actions set out in the new Programme for Government provide sufficient support for your business to grow?
Please register your interest in participating by emailing emma@dublinchamber.ie. Attendance will be limited, so the remaining participant list will be filled on a first come first served basis.
