ENACT: Sustainable Renovations in Ireland

Back to Articles

06 June 2024

According to the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland), the retrofit of Ireland's commercial and public sector buildings is central to reaching the country’s 2030 and 2050 national and international decarbonisation targets.

Funded by SEAI, the project ENACT is a three-year initiative tasked with ‘enabling national action on commercial renovation’. Led by the Irish Green Building Council, the University of Galway, Sustainability Works, Dublin Chambers of Commerce, and the Society for Chartered Surveyors of Ireland are partners in the project, working towards different deliverables.

As part of the ENACT project, a Case Study Analysis offers valuable insights for SMEs considering property renovations. The study addresses the economic, environmental, and social costs of renovating commercial properties.

One notable case is Slate Ireland, which focused on sustainable energy practices, energy-efficient systems, and improved workplace amenities. Their use of energy-efficient materials and insulation highlights the benefits of modernised office spaces.

The analysis of Slate Ireland and 14 other case studies concludes that understanding the stages of renovation and phasing the process can help property owners manage financial and logistical challenges effectively.
