Dublin Chamber warns Dubliners must have clear and detailed proposals in advance of Directly Elected Mayor vote
Thursday 8th of June 2023: Speaking before Cabinet today Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar confirmed that a vote will be held in 2024 on a Directly Elected Mayor for Dublin. Stephen Browne, Head of Public Affairs commented: “We welcome the opportunity for Dubliners to have a say in how the county of Dublin is governed going forward. We have outlined our proposals on this issue to the Citizens Assembly, noting that it is not the title of the role, which is important, but rather proposals of the powers that the office will have. If the powers are not there, we are concerned that the idea of a whole of Dublin Mayor will not work. We await Government to digest the recommendations of the Assembly and send them to the Joint Oireachtas Committee for further discussion.”
“We think it is critical that Dubliners have detailed and crystal clear proposals on what powers will attach to the Office of a Directly Elected Mayor well in advance of any vote."
